“It’s just a great place to interact with other families that have been through what we went through,” said Kristin Geber, whose young daughter Alice had neuroblastoma cancer, but no longer any evidence of disease. “It allows the kids to socialize with other kids that truly understand their situation.”
The third annual Back to School Bash is officially in the books and boy, what a fun time we had! The rain held off just long enough for more than 150 children and their families to enjoy free food, activities, school-themed crafts and of course, backpacks and supplies for the upcoming school year.
“It’s crazy how much enrollment increased for this year’s event. I think that means we’re doing something right,” laughed Melissa Beaman, director of programs for Children’s Cancer Connection. “The Back to School Bash is definitely one of the most popular events among our families.”
This year’s event, which was organized by the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation and employees of Iowa Select Farms, included face painting, balloon twisting, spin art, BINGO, bookmark and door hanger crafts, an ice cream truck and more!
“We’re having a lot of fun,” said Kristin’s daughter, Alice. “I like to spend time with my friends here and do fun things together.”
Located in Des Moines, the Hansen Home for Hope is a homelike place where families affected by childhood cancer can find support and comfort. In addition to having onsite laundry facilities, an exercise room, kitchen, craft room and theater area, it also serves as the offices for the Children’s Cancer Connection (and a great place for fun events, too!).
“We focus on the entire family, the entire journey,” continued Melissa. “Those that have been treated in Iowa, live in Iowa or are diagnosed in Iowa are who we serve. Much like this event, our Children’s Cancer Connection family just continues to grow and grow.”
The Back to School Bash is one of several events and programs organized through our partnership with Children’s Cancer Connection, which serves over 500 families across Iowa.
