October 13, 2021

“I come from a family of livestock farmers, so I’ve always had great respect and appreciation for those who work in the farming industry,” said Future Ag Leader Scholarship recipient, Alondra. “I gained an even greater respect and appreciation when my family and I moved here to Iowa and my dad started working at Iowa Select Farms.”

Alondra’s father, Jesus, is an assistant farrowing department head. Their family lives in Storm Lake.

Alondra stayed close to home for college and is currently attending Buena Vista University studying psychology and Spanish with a minor in social innovation. She would like to further her learning by going to graduate school to eventually pursue a career in higher education and professional school counseling.

As a first-generation college student, the challenges Alondra has faced fueled her desire to help others. She hopes she can help other first generation college students navigate the difficult pathway of higher education in the future.

“My goal is hopefully work with diverse groups of underrepresented students and their families here in the Midwest, such as first-generation college students and Hispanic/Latinx students, so that they can have a better understanding of and more access to higher education,” she said.

We wish Alondra the best of luck in pursuit of her goal to help support other students. Keep up the great work!
