Haul Out Hunger— Alden

June 26, 2019

Group celebrates with signs and boxes indoors.

“Most people don’t know that this pantry started as a one-room shop in City Hall,” said Betty Thomas, one of the many volunteers that can be found at the Hilltop Village Food Pantry in Alden. “That was nearly 30 years ago and the pantry served 3 families. Today we’re in a new building and serving nearly 150 individuals every month. It’s just incredible how much we’ve grown.”

With ten consistent volunteers that run the pantry, the ladies in Alden quite literally have a lot on their plate as they take a stand against food insecurity in their community.

“Our efforts are focused on serving the Alden School District. We open our doors Fridays, Saturdays and on an as-needed basis,” explained Betty. “We offer the regular items like canned goods, bread and meat, but we also stock our shelves with helpful household items like laundry detergent, toothbrushes and soap. Each family gets what they need based on the size of their household. We try to make it as fair as possible.”
