Haul Out Hunger— Nevada

June 21, 2019

Group celebrates with smiles and gifts indoors.

“We have a 10-year old boy who loves volunteering at the pantry,” said Gil Peterson, coordinator of the Community Cupboard in Nevada. “He carries groceries to people cars and asks them how their day is going. We always joke that we have a future Fareway carryout boy our hands. He puts a smile on everyone’s face.”

At the Community Cupboard, there is no shortage of kindness, laughter and generosity.

“We’re here to help out anyone in eastern Story County,” explained Gil. “We open our doors every Saturday morning and then on an as-needed basis. Our system is to pre-bag 18 items and then distribute bags based on family size.”

Since 1997, Gil has been running the pantry, which is located in the back parking lot of Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Nevada. “I’m a community guy,” he exclaimed. “Myself and the other volunteers know how much the community needs food aid, and we’re just happy to fulfill that need.”

Currently, the Community Cupboard serves 12 families per month, and each of those families is going to get a 4.5-pound pork loin after today’s donation.

NevadaThanks to Gil and all of the volunteers at the Community Cupboard in Nevada for your dedication and commitment to ending food-insecurity in Story County. We will continue to haul out hunger together!
