Huxley Food Pantry

August 3, 2017

Three people stand together holding items with shelves and binders behind them.

Nestled in the back half of a beautiful, old home you will find the Huxley Food Pantry. And anytime you visit the pantry you can almost guarantee that you will run into volunteers, Jackie Rasmussen and Jackie Fjelland, or as their food pantry-regulars like to call them, “the Jackies”.

Thanks to the tireless work of volunteers like Rasmussen and Fjelland, the Huxley food pantry is able to open their doors every Wednesday. Currently, the pantry serves more than 300 families a year and we were thrilled to donate 180 pounds of pork loin to support their tremendous cause.

In addition to opening their doors to local families once a month, the Huxley Food Pantry puts together baskets throughout the year for Easter, Christmas and even birthdays.

“Holidays are typically when families struggle most with stretching their budgets even further than usual,” explained Fjelland. “We think that simply being together for family meals is important, so we encourage that as much as possible. Our baskets are just one example of the things that we’re doing to bring these families closer together.”

We have been to a lot of food pantries and this one definitely stacks up. The walls boasted a variety of canned goods and nonperishable food items and the “Jackies” blew us away with their kindness. Communities like Huxley are what keep us motivated, energized and excited to end hunger in the state of Iowa. #HaulOutHunger #BillionPlus
